Environmental Surveying in collaboration with Galápagos National Park Directorate
For several years, RWMT has collaborated with authorities and universities in Ecuador to conduct archaeological investigations on and in the sediment deposits on the seabed off the coast of Ecuador. This collaboration has worked very well, and there has been a desire to expand the agreement.
Various Ecuadorian authorities, including representatives of the Galápagos National Park Directorate (GNPD) and the team from RWMT, have held meetings throughout 2021 to clarify how cooperation between Ecuador and the RWMT can be developed further.
The series of meetings has resulted in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the GNPD and RWMT describing several areas of cooperation:
- Charting the seafloor and sub-bottom sediment
- Mapping of the current status of coral reefs
- Measuring of submarine sediment layers
- Ocean temperature observation
After an initial survey, follow-up surveys will take place at regular time intervals to ascertain and document any changes in object distribution, condition of coral reefs, sediment layers and temperature.
The joint Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on November 24, 2021, and marks the beginning of at least five years of collaborative work starting in 2022.
